The Mudlarks
"The Mudlarks" is the name given to the cricket team which is made up of players from Westbury United AFC, this is
an old nickname which the Club had after the pitch they used pre-1950
(see history page). The idea for the Team came from Toby
McGregor who originally thought about organising a game during the summer involving members of the football club, When
Westbury-on -Severn Cricket Club were asked if it would be possible to use the cricket
ground they kindly offered us a fixture. The first fixture was played in 2005 with us playing Westbury CC 2nd XI for The
Westbury Ashes Trophy which resulted in the Mudlarks being heavily defeated. The fixture was replayed in 2006 with same
result however it was a much closer affair. Some details from the games can be found below. If any Westbury UTD players past
or present would be interested in playing in the 2007 fixture please contact us through the site.

Westbury C.C. 2nd XI v The Mudlarks - 2005
The cricket club captain Ian Nice (son of Nicey) won the toss and batted
first. The innings got off to worst possible start with Nice and Marshall
falling cheaply to Witts and Eamer respectively. Ridler and Cotterel moved
the score on quickly, before Jammer took what is widely accepted as the catch
of the season to remove Cotterel. Unfortunately this was followed by dropping
two dollies, which enabled Ridler to score a quick file 63. A solid 60 from
Mike (Mr cricket) Edginton and useful runs from Few, Reid and Beddington
allowed the cricket club to amass a respectable 214 from 40 overs.
Witts returning figures of 3 for 21 from 8 overs.
With no keeper, Nicey choose to keep wicket for the first time, and had a
dream start, catching Palmer off the bowling of Soudly striker Beddington
for a Duck. Browner then took charge as wickets fell around him. T McGregor,
J Tilstone, A Mcgregor, J Young, M Eamer all falling for ducks in 11 overs.
Lusty blows from Snellgrove and Griffin along with a fantastic 49 from Brown
(meanly caught by Reid at cover, having changed his mind twice) took the
football club onto a respectable 83 all out.
Team :- Richard Brown, James Collick, Mike Eamer, Liam Griffin, Alex McGregor,
Toby McGregor, Derek Palmer, Rob Snelgrove, John Tilstone, Anthony Witts, John Young.
Westbury C.C. 2nd XI v The Mudlarks - 22nd July 2006
The cricket club captain Dave "power arm" Reid one the toss and chose to
bat. After a delay for rain, Reider played a captains innings for a seasons
best 31, finally caught by Joe McGregor off Snellgrove. Everyone from the
football club bowled, but the McGregor's (Joe and Toby) both excelled with
figures of 5 overs 1 for 17 (Joe) and 5 overs 3 for 15 (Toby). Toby also
has bragging rights for a whole year having dismissed Clive "shaggy" Tempest
after a Boycotte style 11. After a top display of bowling and fielding the
cricket club were under pressure being all out for 138 in the last over.
Chasing 138 the football club got off to a bad start loosing Browner and
Jammer without score in the first five overs (sorry Jammer!). But Derek
Palmer rolled back the years to score a magnificent 64, finally succumbing
to Prentice, trying to push on the scoring rate. A useful 37 for Alex McGregor
(the McGregor family stealing the show), brought the football club to 29
behind with four overs to go. However tight bowling by Karl "Burger" George
saved the cricket club?s blushes by restricting the football club to 121
for 5 from 32 overs. A tight game that surly the football club would have
won, if the full 40 overs had been played without rain. The question is,
can they go one better next year and show the cricket club how it is done?
Team :- Richard Brown, James Collick, Mike Eamer, Alex McGregor, Joe McGregor
Toby McGregor, Derek Palmer, Rob Snelgrove, John Tilstone, Anthony Witts, John Young.

Westbury C.C. 2nd XI v The Mudlarks - 16th September 2007
Westbury Cricket club batted first and the Mudlarks knew they were in trouble when with only 9 fielders on the pitch
they watched as Phil Marshall and Mike "Edge the Ledge" Edgington strolled out of the pavillion and onto the square.
For the first 4 overs the opening pair were bogged down with some outstanding bowling from Mike Eamer and Joe McGregor
however the pair were soon firing and Mike quickly reached his fifty, closesly followed by Phil.
Deciding to cut loose Phil soon fell to a "you miss i hit" express delivery from Shaggy and this followed a mini collapse
as Clive took the wickets of Blair and old man Jellyman.
Mike graciousley retired after scoring a fantastic century and was roundly applauded from the pitch. The final wicket to fall
was that of Edge Jnr from the bowling of Eamer the Beamer and Westbury went on to score 238 - 4.
The Mudlarks opened with Clive Tempest and last years hero Dezzy Palmer and they got us off to a great start with an opening stand
of 50 before Clive eventually fell. The football club team was joined by Anthony Witts and Matty Freed to bolster the
batting line up but unfortunately they only contributed 2 runs!. We then witnessed the finest display of defensive cricket
by Luke Murdoch......NOT!!!
Cocker and Alex batted well and supported Derek as he reached an excellent 50, he was eventually bowled out by the Countys
fastest spinner Super Tedder! Joe, Jammer,Toby and Eamer scored quickfire runs but were eventually all out for 183 from 38 overs.
Hopefully next year with a full side we'll get that blasted cup!!!
Team :- Mike Eamer, Alex McGregor, Joe McGregor, Toby McGregor, Derek Palmer, Clive Tempest, James Collick,
Luke Murdoch, Dave Cox and late replacements Anthony Witts and Mat Freed (thanks chaps).
