Westbury United has a long and illustrious history, the club was formed in
1907 and their celebration of 90 years in local football was marked with a dinner
where the guest of honour was former Liverpool and Scotland great Ian St.John. In the 2007/08 season the 100 year
anniversary was celebrated with an awards dinner hosted by World Cup winner Nobby Stiles and attended by former Captains
and guests from our associated club in Aulendorf, Germany.
In the early years they played in a field behind the church and because of the constant
flooding of the ground they were aptly nicknamed the Mudlarks, a name that is not
used anymore. To overcome this problem the Parish Council obtained and developed
the facilities they currently use, moving to this ground in 1950.
The club was very much a village side and it was not until they moved to their
new ground that they first met with success by winning the North Gloucestershire
League (NGL) Division II in 1950-51. Relegation must have followed in the interim
period as their next success came when they won NGL Division III in 1960-61.
The club won the prestigious Fletcher Cup for sportsmanship in 1989-90 being
marked as the best sporting team in the League by the referees. Their first appearance
in a Hospital Cup Final was in 1990-91 when the 1st XI lost 3-1 to Yorkley Reserves
in the George Sandoe Cup at Worrall Hill, the only goal for Westbury being scored by
Dave Cox. Cups have come to the club in different ways and their linesman, Dennis
Dunn, won the NGL Linesman Cup for 5 consecutive seasons from 1988-93 and
again in 1994-95. In 1992-93 the 1st XI gained promotion to the NGL Premier
Division when they finished Runners up to Broadwell Reserves.
The most successful season in the clubs history was to come in 1998-99 when
the 1st XI claimed the "double" by winning the NGL Premier Division, gaining
promotion to Northern Senior League Division II, and the George Sandoe Cup while the Reseves gained promotion from Division 3 to Division 2. The
NGL Premier Division was won with a 100% away record and the Cup with a 4-0 win
over Gala/Wilton at Harrow Hill.
Unfortunately the Reserves got relegated at the end of 2003/04 season but reached the J.O.Roberts
cup final in the 2004/05 season where they narrowly lost to a higher division side.
Currently the 1st XI are playing in the Dean Electical North Glos Premier Division and the reserves are
playing in the Dean Electrical North Glos Division III.
